When You Don't Know Your Exact Numbers

Hourly wage — you don't pay yourself a set wage: Think about what you'd have to pay someone else to do what you do. That's your floor. Start at $25.00/hr and adjust up based on your skill, experience, and market.

Hours per week — it varies: Use a normal week during a typical production period. If you run embroidery alongside another job, enter only your embroidery hours. If it varies significantly, use the middle of your range.

Weeks per year — account for time off: Subtract vacations, holidays, and slow weeks where production stops. 50 weeks is a reasonable starting point. Adjust down if you close seasonally.

Do I need to fill in every role in Part A? ⌄

No. Fill in what applies to your shop. If you have no employees, skip those rows. If you only perform two of the three owner roles, fill in those two. Leave unused rows blank and the calculator ignores them.

What is the Effective Labor Rate and why does it matter? ⌄

Your Effective Labor Rate is your total annual labor cost divided by your total annual production hours. It's the single number that represents the true cost of one hour of work in your shop — not just what you pay a production employee, but the full cost including every role that touches the order. This is the rate the calculator uses when it prices your time on any given order. If you've been using a simpler per-hour guess, this number may surprise you.

My Effective Labor Rate came out below $25.00/hr. What does that mean? ⌄

It means your current labor rates and hours don't cover the NNEP minimum for profitable pricing. Check your inputs first — a common cause is underestimating hours or entering wages below market rate. My embroidery business is part-time. Will this calculator work for me? ⌄

Yes — and it matters more, not less. Enter only the hours you actually work on your embroidery business each week, not your total working hours. A shop owner who embroiders 10 hours a week has a different cost structure than one who runs full-time, and the calculator handles that correctly as long as your inputs reflect your actual embroidery business hours.
